My private practice as a psychiatric nurse
clinical specialist began in 1985. Since 1968, I'd worked
with infants, families, and adolescents in a variety of
private and public health-delivery systems. I completed
my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1991. My pre- and post-doctoral
training has been in the psychodynamic treatment of adults
in individual and group psychotherapy. In 1990, I was certified
as a Group Psychotherapist, and in 1996 I was licensed in
Massachusetts as a Clinical Psychologist Health Provider.
I consult primarily with adults who are 18 and above, both
individually and in groups. In my office, I have three weekly
adult (20 and older) psychotherapy groups. Two of the groups
are specifically for people with major affective disorders
(depression and bipolar disorder). My clinical specialties
are with the affective disorders, some psychotic disorders,
and disorders related to trauma.
People come for psychotherapy when their life is not working,
or when they fear losing control. Those who work with me
are encouraged to be on their own psychotherapy treatment
team. I am a guide, and a teacher. I work with all types
of people. I do not push, but invite to investigate and
question. As a consultant, I share my own observations and
questions, and invite questions as well.
One goal of psychotherapy is to build self-awareness. A
second is to be open and curious about ourselves and in
how we relate to others. Psychotherapy is mostly about learning,
unlearning, and re-education. In learning about ourselves,
we also learn how we relate to others. All of us live in
some form of social group; therefore, to know one's self
is a powerful tool in life.
